Komodo Dragons Tours

Komodo Dragons
It is a scarce animal which you can still see nowadays only in Komodo National Park. It less than 2500 population which can reach more than three meters in length and weigh as much as 90 kilograms living free in the Park's dramatic landscape involves the rugged hillside of dry savannah, pockets of monsoon forest, white sandy beaches and sparkling blue water with beautiful underwater world. Komodo dragon is an animal breeding by laying eggs and each komodo can lay eggs until 30 pieces. It brood its egg until 9 months in its nest which is made under ground until its baby can bear . It makes several holes around it nest to camouflage from other predators. Komodo is one of the dangerous predators can eat each other including their babies. The most population can be found in Rinca Island rather than Komodo Island it self.

THE THREATS
Komodo National Park is dwelt by many species wild animals from both land and sea which are now still protected. It was originally to conserve the Komodo dragon which the conservation goals have since expanded to protect the Park's entire biodiversity. The animals are protected in this park from the land like Komodo dragon, bat, Megapod Bird, Monkey, Cockatoo, water buffalo, deer, horse, other birds and from the sea like Manta Ray, Cetacea, Shark, Turtle, other fish and coral. Therefore illegal hunting, fishing or any king of animal catching efforts are strongly not permitted to keep the continuity of the park's life.

Meanwhile the threats to the parks are not limited only to the sea, poaching or illegal hunting and gathering of wildlife such as turtle eggs, Timor deer, fruit bats and addible (swift let) birth nests – also continues and can have far reaching consequences. We take the example of Timor deer that they are well protected as a vital source of food to Komodo dragon and it is estimated that for every deer poached, there will be one less yearly meal for each adult dragon. The impact on the Park does not stop there; poacher will often set fire to grassland to flush out deer, which can cause extensive dead and damage to plants and animals in the park including the Komodo dragons.

Since 2001, the local government established a Park zoning system to give more control access and use within all marine and terrestrial area of the Park. This zone system is well protecting the from the poaching and keep the continuity of the park's life.

Pulau Sebayur Komodo Flores

http://www.komodo.tours
Alam bawah laut wilayah timur Indonesia memang dikenal masih belum tercemar sehingga biota laut baik flora maupun faunanya masih hidup alamiah di habitatnya.

Komodo Tours Adventure

Visit Flores is not completed if you don’t visit Komodo National Park. Flores, especially Labuan Bajo is the main gateway to Komodo National Park. Komodo National Park is known for its massive living lizard, Komodo dragon or ora for the local people. The Komodo dragon is actually a monitor lizard. All monitor lizards have something in common: the head is tapered, the ears opening are visible, the neck is long and slender, the eyes have eyelids and round pupils, and the jaws are powerful. But the dragons also have massive bodies, four powerful legs which allow them to sprint in short distance. They can reach three meters long with 100 kg weight.

Komodo dragon was introduced to the world after the first Dutch expedition to the island in 1910. Two dragons were shot and their skins taken to Java. In 1959, David Attborough a naturalist and adventurer film the dragons. Dragon inhabits four islands: Komodo, Rinca, Nusa Kode, Gili Motang. Now the population of the Komodo dragons is approximately 2700s. It is the last data published by the Komodo National Park Management. Besides of Komodo dragon, Komodo National Park is a home for many wild lives such as water buffalo, wild horse, Timor deer, wild boar, monkeys which is the main food for the Komodo dragons. The Komodo Dragon

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 metres (6.6 to 9.8 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (150 lb). Their unusual size has been attributed to island gigantism, since there are no other carnivorous animals to fill the niche on the islands where they live.

In 1995 a US environment protection group began a conservation project designed to create a more natural habitat for the komodos, prohibiting the feeding tradition as well as deer hunting practised by the islanders. The deer population consequently increased and is now providing the komodos a more self-sufficient and natural hunting ground than in recent history. Still, having become used to being fed, the komodos occasionally prefer to seek out easier prey in the vicinity of human settlements by entering villages and hiding under stilt-houses while awaiting opportunity to snap passing goat or chicken. At the same time, the animals have become more aggressive towards humans, sometimes resulting in deadly attacks. Nevertheless, the Komodo Dragon remains a symbolic attraction of the island, drawing a large number of visiting tourists, providing employment and supporting a local economy.

Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo Island, Rinca Island and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2.

Komodo Island is not just known its heritage of convicts and fearsome lizards but also for its rich marine life and excellent dive sites.
