Kelimutu Tours & Travel

Kelimutu National Park is the smallest national park of six National Parks in Bali and Nusa Tenggara. Here there are three lakes located on top of Mount Kelimutu, three lakes have the same name and popularly known as the Lake Kelimutu. Each lake has colors and their meanings. The three lakes are believed to be the abode of spirits and also believed to have a very powerful force of nature. To reach the lake, you can start from Moni, a small town which is the backpacker.

Scientifically discoloration Kelimutu is a factor of mineral deposits, moss and rocks in the crater and also the influence of sunlight. Scientists believe that the lake was formed from volcano eruptions in ancient times. Kelimutu Lake is part of the Kelimutu National Park . The highest point of the park is located at 5.679 feet Kelibara mountain (1.731 meters) and Mount Kelimutu feet or as high as 5.544 (1.690 meters). Kelimutu National Park is home to around 19 species of endangered birds.

Local people believe that the lake is where the souls of the dead rest. Kelimutu area surrounded by forests that covered a variety of plants that are rarely found elsewhere on Flores. Besides pine trees, there are also ferns, plant genus Casuarina, redwood and edelweiss flowers.

Komodo Island

Komodo Island is an island in Komodo National Park as a sanctuary of Komodo Dragons, the biggest reptiles in the world. Furthermore, it is one of the famous islands among 17,508 islands in Indonesia protecting the biggest lizard on Earth. Meanwhile, the island is particularly as the habitat of the Komodo Dragons. Therefore, the name of the island is just coming from this animal. Komodo Island is just around 390 square kilometers with a human population of over two thousands. The local people are descendants of former convicts who were exiled to the island as well as who have mixed with Bugis from Sulawesi. In addition, the island is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the the national park. Nowadays, this island is a popular island as a tourist destination in Indonesia as well as a place to discover the dragons.

The stories of a dragon existing in the region circulated widely and attracted considerable attention. Nevertheless, no one visit the island to check the story until official interest was sparked in the early 1910s by stories from Dutch sailors based in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province about a mysterious creature. Furthermore, the creature was allegedly a dragon which inhabited a small island in the Lesser Sunda Islands. And then, the Dutch sailors reported that the creature measured up to seven meters in length with a large body and mouth which constantly spat fire. Afterward, Lieutenant Steyn van Hensbroek, an official of the Dutch Colonial Administration in Flores, planned a trip to Komodo Island. Finally, he armed himself with a team of soldiers accompany him and landed successfully. Afterwards, Hensbroek managed to kill one of the lizards.

Van Hensbroek took the dragon to headquarters where measurements were taken. It was approximately 2.1 meters long, with a shape very similar to that of a lizard. Furthermore, some samples photographed by Peter A Ouwens, the Director of the Zoological Museum and Botanical Gardens in Bogor, Java. From the record of Ouwens made is the first reliable documentation of the details about what is now called the Komodo dragon? Moreover, Ouwens was keen to obtain additional samples. Therefore, he recruited hunters who killed two dragons measuring 3.1 meters and 3.35 meters as well as capturing two pups, each measuring less than one meter. Ouwens had successfully carried out studies on the samples and concluded that the Komodo dragon was not a flame-thrower but was a type of monitor lizard. This research results were published in 1912. Afterward, Ouwens give the name of this giant lizard as Varanus komodoensis.

The Island is perfectly as a habitat of the wild giant lizard, Komodo Dragons. It is because, Komodo Island is well featured by the wide savanna where other faunas are also living together in this island. The other faunas are living in this island such as Javan deer, water buffalo, banded pigs, civets, cockatoo and macaques. Therefore, Komodo Dragon Tours are the exciting Komodo Tour Packages encouraging you to this island and discover these fauna.

Komodo Dragon & National Park

Komodo dragon, as befits any creature evoking a mythological beast, has many names. It is also the Komodo monitor, being a member of the monitor lizard family, Varanidae, which today has one genus, Varanus.  Residents of the island of Komodo call it the ora. Among some on Komodo and the islands of Rinca and Flores, it is buaya darat, a name that is descriptive but inaccurate; monitors are not crocodiles. Others call it biawak raksasa  (giant monitor), which is quite correct; it ranks as the largest of the monitor lizards, a necessary logical consequence of its standing as the largest lizard of any kind now living on the eart. Within the scientific community, the dragon is Varanus komodoensis. And most everyone calls it simply the Komodo.”  Claudio Ciofi.
The Komodo dragon is an ancient species whose ancestors date back over 100 million years. The Varanid genus originated between 25 and 40 million years ago in Asia. The Komodo descended from this species and evolved to its present form over four million years ago.
The Komodo is long lived as are most of the larger reptilian species with an estimated life expectancy of over 50 years in the wild. In keeping with its longevity, the Komodo matures late in life, becoming sexually viable at five to seven years, and achieving maximum body density in fifteen years. Komodo dragons are sexually dimorphous, which means males are bigger than females. The largest recorded specimen was 3.13 meters in length and was undoubtedly a male. Females rarely exceed 2.5 meters in length. What is perhaps more important, is that the characteristic bulk is achieved by older dominant males in clearly delineated territorial areas. As an adult Komodo can consume up to 80% of its body weight in one gorging, weight is a highly variable factor, and is largely dependent on the most recent feeding. A typical weight for an adult Komodo in the wild is 70 kilograms.
Komodo dragons are first and foremost opportunistic carnivores, and predators second.  Although the Komodo can sprint briefly at 20 kilometers an hour, it does not chase down game as do the larger mammalian predators. The Komodo is a stealth predator, which lies motionless and camoflouged alongside game trails for the unwary, which tend to be the very young, the old and the infirm. In an attack, the Komodo lunges at its victim with blinding speed and clasps it with the serrated teeth of the jaw. Prey are rarely downed in the initial attack unless the neck is broken or ceratoid artery severed. The more likely outcome is escape, followed by death a few hours or days later from septicemia introduced by the virulent strains of bacteria found in the saliva of the Komodo dragon (the Komodo survive primarily on carrion and  ingest the bacteria when feeding).
The Dragons has two highly developed sensory organs – the olefactory and the Jacobson’s  – which allow the dragon to detect rotting carcasses from distances as great as 10 kilometers. The yellow forked tongue is constantly being flicked in and out of the mouth, “tasting the air”, and inserted into the Jacobson’s organ located in the roof of the mouth. The individual tips are highly sensitive and are capable of discriminating odors in the magnitude of millionths of a part. Using the information garnered, the dragon wends in a seemingly random, winding path which becomes straighter the closer it approaches to the carrion.
The Komodo is typically a communal feeder and any number of dragons might arrive at the site of the carcass. Socialization occurs during feeding at carrion sites, as does mating. The abdomen is slashed first and the intestines and stomach contents scattered. Young juveniles roll in the fecal matter to mask their scent from aggressive adults, which attack and sometimes kill juveniles during feeding. The dominant male feeds until sated, followed by other dragons in order of size. While the dominant male is gulping down hindquarters and ribcages, the braver dragons chance foraging a few scraps. Virtually the entire carcass is consumed in the process– head, fur, hooves and bones. After feeding, the Komodos become quiescent and approachable while their digestive tracts are converting the food into fat energy stored in the tail.
Between the months of May and August, mating occurs at and around feeding sites. As males outnumber females in a ratio of nearly four to one, the dominant male must fend off other suitors before mating. Males will engage in slashing, biting and bipedular rearing onto the tail, until the dominant male is acknowledged by displays of subservience and the vanquished flees. The female is forced into a prone position while the male tongue flicks her body, and in particular, the fold between the torso and the rear leg close to the cloaca. With Komodos, the male hemipenes are located here as are the female genetalia. Once prone, the male mounts onto the back of the female and inserts one of the two hemipenes into her cloaca , depending on which side he is perched. The month of September is when a clutch of 15-30 eggs is buried in a nest dug with the powerful claws of the female dragon. A typical nesting site is in the composting vegetative mounds of the maleo birds which are indigenous to Komodo.
The gestation period for the eggs is eight to nine months. Hatching, which average 40 centimeters in length and weigh 100 grams, emerge from the nest in April and immediately scramble up the nearest tree to avoid being eaten by the adults.  There are plenty of small lizards, insects and mammals in the canopy after the brief rainy season in January and February to sustain the juveniles until they descend to the forest floor roughly a year later. This period of change between an arboreal and a terrestrial habitat, when the juveniles are a meter in length, is a time fraught with danger.  The juvenile Komodo is just too bulky to safely ascend many trees, and not big enough to outrun a ravenous and determined adult. Cannibalism is a fact of life for this species, and perhaps is an evolutionary response to the harsh, arid climate of Komodo.
Prey species for the dragon on Komodo island include deer, boar, wild buffalo, the Maleo bird, snakes, reptiles and small mammals. On Rinca, the monkeys and wild horses found there are also constitute prey, as do the goats raised by the local people. On the odd occasion people are also attacked by the Komodo dragon. There have been eight recorded instances of attacks on humans since Komodo has become a national park, almost all of which occurred on Rinca.

Komodo Island the famous of KOMODO DRAGON ( the biggest lesser on the world ) komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Established in 1980, initially the main purpose of the Park was to conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and its habitat. However, over the years, the goals for the Park have expanded to protecting its entire biodiversity, both terrestrial and marine. In 1986, the Park was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, both indications of the Park's biological importance.
Komodo National Park includes three major islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands creating a total surface area (marine and land) of 1817km (proposed extensions would bring the total surface area up to 2,321km2). Komodo National Park West Flores Island

The Komodo National Park or KNP is located with the archipelago of Indonesia between the beautiful islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The park is a huge expanding project that is currently 1817km and with the current expansion plans this will soon be extending to 2,321km2 including marine and land reserves. The current threats and issues that the Komodo National Park deal with differ between species and the states of the ecosystems from with they are from. The Komodo National Park is the leading contributor to the maintaining and reintroduction plans for many endangered species such as the orange-footed fowl, the Timor deer and a number of endemic rodents. Underwater the situation is different, the main focuses on marine life are combating the over fishing of commercial species and the protection of the damage in which these dramatic declines in biomass inflict upon these unstable ecosystems and protection of coral and all marine life from the destructive and indiscriminative techniques that are often employed in Indonesia such as dynamite, cyanide and indiscriminative netting methods that collect far more unwanted fish then the target fish. Coral environments have evolved to respond only to very slow changes in their environment and this kind of destructive practice has to be combated. The Komodo National Park's focus underwater is concentrated the coral reefs themselves, the mangroves, seabed grasses, semi enclosed bays and seamounts, all of which are represented from with the respective areas of the park.

Reaching the national park is not difficult despite its secluded tropical location, most guests visit as part of a trip based in either Sumbawa or Flores and reach the Komodo National Park via Labuan Bajo in the west Flores area or from Bima, the gateway city in eastern Sumbawa. It is also possible to fly directly into Labuan Bajo from Bali Denpasar everyday on airlines such as Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) and Trans Nusa airlines that also offer flights from Java. These are always cheap and short flights making a short trip to the Komodo National Park an easy day out from many of the Indonesian Islands.

The Komodo National Park has over 1000 species of rare fish, 260 species of progressive base line coral that actually create the reefs themselves and 7 species of sponges that are essential to the surface of the reef. Large species are also present including sharks, Dugong, manta rays, over 14 species of endangered whales, dolphins and the now recovering giant turtles.

Awareness of these programs is essential to the improvements of these situations which are of huge importance in the future of the world's biosphere. Come and marvel at the wonders and hope instilled in the National Park and contribute to the progress. The Komodo National Park is an excellent day out for all the family where some of the rarest and most wonderful creatures are viewable in their natural surrounding, protected from the dangers that the modern world has inflicted upon them.

Joining of our our Komodo Adventure Tours will complete your travel experience in the tropical island of Flores in West Manggarai. Komodo National Park

The Komodo National Park is located around a large area of water and a number of islands including the three main islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Located in the southern band of islands in the Indonesian archipelago, Komodo can be found situated between Sumbawa and Flores in the centre of the band and offers great spectacles both on these incredible dry islands and beneath the waters around some of the most biologically diverse marine habitats in the world. The Komodo National Park is perhaps most famous for the gigantic and ferocious Komodo Dragons which can be found on both islands and are an incredible sight. Endemic only to these three islands of the world these large beasts are a rare thing. As well as this there are also a number of other species exclusive to this tiny area of the world such as the giant rats (which appear more like giant Ginny pigs) and the remains of extinct tiny human forms as well as other oddly sized animals. This is due to phenomena known as the small island effect whereby animals usually become extremely large or extremely small in competition with each other within a highly competitive environment of limited resources.

The Komodo National Park is now a World Heritage Site and as well as a Man and Biosphere Reserve of the UNESCO who are fighting to protect this invaluable area of natural beauty. Species’ visible in the Komodo National Park including the Giant Komodo rats, the Timor Deer and the Orange-footed Scrub Fowl before even considering the vast coral reefs teeming with life all around the area with 1000s of species of fish and 260 reef building corals even in a single bay. Dugongs, sharks, over 14 species of whale, dolphins, manta rays and sea turtles are among some of the more impressive creatures in these waters.

Unfortunately, Komodo National Park, like so many protected area of the world the Komodo National Park faces a collection of threats such as the rising pressure in forest cover and the water grid, an 800% increase in human population over the last 60 years, the obvious problems of Timor Deer and Komodo Dragons living on the same islands but as well as this natural interaction there is also a great deal of poaching and highly destructive dynamite fishing as well as pollution from all sorts of sources. These problems stem from a lack of education in environmental issues as well as the developing nature of the people living these countries who often have no choice but to carry out these activities to feed there families. There are however constant attempts to educate and support these local people channelling their incredible potential into other methods of making a living and with the rise in Eco tourism in the area of the Komodo National Park, there are more and more jobs that promote the importance of protecting these areas for instant financial gratification which is a complete turn around.

Komodo Island Indonesia

Komodo is one of the 17,508 islands that compose the Republic of Indonesia. The island is particularly notable as the habitat of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth, which is named after the island. Komodo Island has a surface area of 390 square kilometres and a human population of over two thousand. The people of the island are descendants of former convicts who were exiled to the island and who have mixed with Bugis from Sulawesi. The people are primarily adherents of Islam but there are also Christian and Hindu congregations.

Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the Komodo National Park. In addition, the island is a popular destination for diving. Administratively, it is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province.

Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the Komodo National Park. It lies between the substantially larger neighboring islands Sumbawa to the west and Flores to the east. The island's surface area covers 390 square kilometres.

The earliest stories of a dragon existing in the region circulated widely and attracted considerable attention. But no one visited the island to check the story until official interest was sparked in the early 1910s by stories from Dutch sailors based in Flores in East Nusa Tenggara about a mysterious creature. The creature was allegedly a dragon which inhabited a small island in the Lesser Sunda Islands (the main island of which is Flores).

The Dutch sailors reported that the creature measured up to seven metres (twenty-three feet) in length with a large body and mouth which constantly spat fire. Hearing the reports, Lieutenant Steyn van Hensbroek, an official of the Dutch Colonial Administration in Flores, planned a trip to Komodo Island. He armed himself, and accompanied by a team of soldiers he landed on the island. After a few days, Hensbroek managed to kill one of the lizards.

Van Hensbroek took the dragon to headquarters where measurements were taken. It was approximately 2.1 metres (6.9 feet) long, with a shape very similar to that of a lizard. More samples were then photographed by Peter A. Ouwens, the Director of the Zoological Museum and Botanical Gardens in Bogor, Java. The records that Ouwens made are the first reliable documentation of details about what is now called the Komodo dragon (or Komodo monitor).

Ouwens was keen to obtain additional samples. He recruited hunters who killed two dragons measuring 3.1 metres and 3.35 metres as well as capturing two pups, each measuring less than one metre. Ouwens carried out studies on the samples and concluded that the Komodo dragon was not a flame-thrower but was a type of monitor lizard. Research results were published in 1912. Ouwens named the giant lizard Varanus komodoensis. Realizing the significance of the dragons on Komodo Island as an endangered species, the Dutch government issued a regulation on the protection of the lizards on Komodo Island in 1915.

The Komodo dragon became something of a living legend. In the decades since the Komodo was discovered, various scientific expeditions from a range of countries have carried out field research on the dragons on Komodo Island

Komodo Dragons Tours

Komodo Dragons
It is a scarce animal which you can still see nowadays only in Komodo National Park. It less than 2500 population which can reach more than three meters in length and weigh as much as 90 kilograms living free in the Park's dramatic landscape involves the rugged hillside of dry savannah, pockets of monsoon forest, white sandy beaches and sparkling blue water with beautiful underwater world. Komodo dragon is an animal breeding by laying eggs and each komodo can lay eggs until 30 pieces. It brood its egg until 9 months in its nest which is made under ground until its baby can bear . It makes several holes around it nest to camouflage from other predators. Komodo is one of the dangerous predators can eat each other including their babies. The most population can be found in Rinca Island rather than Komodo Island it self.

Komodo National Park is dwelt by many species wild animals from both land and sea which are now still protected. It was originally to conserve the Komodo dragon which the conservation goals have since expanded to protect the Park's entire biodiversity. The animals are protected in this park from the land like Komodo dragon, bat, Megapod Bird, Monkey, Cockatoo, water buffalo, deer, horse, other birds and from the sea like Manta Ray, Cetacea, Shark, Turtle, other fish and coral. Therefore illegal hunting, fishing or any king of animal catching efforts are strongly not permitted to keep the continuity of the park's life.

Meanwhile the threats to the parks are not limited only to the sea, poaching or illegal hunting and gathering of wildlife such as turtle eggs, Timor deer, fruit bats and addible (swift let) birth nests – also continues and can have far reaching consequences. We take the example of Timor deer that they are well protected as a vital source of food to Komodo dragon and it is estimated that for every deer poached, there will be one less yearly meal for each adult dragon. The impact on the Park does not stop there; poacher will often set fire to grassland to flush out deer, which can cause extensive dead and damage to plants and animals in the park including the Komodo dragons.

Since 2001, the local government established a Park zoning system to give more control access and use within all marine and terrestrial area of the Park. This zone system is well protecting the from the poaching and keep the continuity of the park's life.

Pulau Sebayur Komodo Flores

Alam bawah laut wilayah timur Indonesia memang dikenal masih belum tercemar sehingga biota laut baik flora maupun faunanya masih hidup alamiah di habitatnya.

Komodo Tours Adventure

Visit Flores is not completed if you don’t visit Komodo National Park. Flores, especially Labuan Bajo is the main gateway to Komodo National Park. Komodo National Park is known for its massive living lizard, Komodo dragon or ora for the local people. The Komodo dragon is actually a monitor lizard. All monitor lizards have something in common: the head is tapered, the ears opening are visible, the neck is long and slender, the eyes have eyelids and round pupils, and the jaws are powerful. But the dragons also have massive bodies, four powerful legs which allow them to sprint in short distance. They can reach three meters long with 100 kg weight.

Komodo dragon was introduced to the world after the first Dutch expedition to the island in 1910. Two dragons were shot and their skins taken to Java. In 1959, David Attborough a naturalist and adventurer film the dragons. Dragon inhabits four islands: Komodo, Rinca, Nusa Kode, Gili Motang. Now the population of the Komodo dragons is approximately 2700s. It is the last data published by the Komodo National Park Management. Besides of Komodo dragon, Komodo National Park is a home for many wild lives such as water buffalo, wild horse, Timor deer, wild boar, monkeys which is the main food for the Komodo dragons. The Komodo Dragon

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 metres (6.6 to 9.8 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (150 lb). Their unusual size has been attributed to island gigantism, since there are no other carnivorous animals to fill the niche on the islands where they live.

In 1995 a US environment protection group began a conservation project designed to create a more natural habitat for the komodos, prohibiting the feeding tradition as well as deer hunting practised by the islanders. The deer population consequently increased and is now providing the komodos a more self-sufficient and natural hunting ground than in recent history. Still, having become used to being fed, the komodos occasionally prefer to seek out easier prey in the vicinity of human settlements by entering villages and hiding under stilt-houses while awaiting opportunity to snap passing goat or chicken. At the same time, the animals have become more aggressive towards humans, sometimes resulting in deadly attacks. Nevertheless, the Komodo Dragon remains a symbolic attraction of the island, drawing a large number of visiting tourists, providing employment and supporting a local economy.

Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo Island, Rinca Island and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2.

Komodo Island is not just known its heritage of convicts and fearsome lizards but also for its rich marine life and excellent dive sites.
